Week 2 – Lecture Summary

App Design and Development Process

Designed for apps requires a deep knowledge of mobile devices and how you can design a service for the appropriate device and how well you can put this idea into practice as well as how effective it is to the user and their context of use.

Designers are required to learn new device resolutions such as Apple Watches. It is a significantly small screen and it forces the designer to push their limit into creating innovative ways in how to design an effective app through their apple watch.

Lean UX Cycle

Think>Make>Check

Think about the app and generate enough research to test results

Make or create prototypes and wireframes in order to understand and produce a solid structure to support the outcome

Lastly, check that your structure works and is effective through usability testing in order to create analytics and statistics.

Tips when making an app

It is important that you start with the largest dimension as it allows you to apply this design to smaller dimensions easier.

By doing so, you can pick and choose clearly what is important to display on your app.

You need to understand what you are making exactly and where it is going to be implemented in the real world and how the user will use it.

Use a variety of operating systems as your phone is not the only type of phone that will be using your app. You need to test it on all platforms such as iOS, Android and Windows. This allows for flexibility with who is able to use your app and there will be little bugs or performance issues across all platforms.

Location of tabs are important depending on your type of app as some are hidden and expanded with a hamburger menu, stagnant on an area of the screen or it may not be there at all.

Prototype everything. You need to prototype every idea that you think of to ensure that it works and it makes sense before actually implementing and confirming it to be on the app.

What you see is not always what you get. You may have this amazing concept in your mind and once you’ve created a prototype on it, it isn’t always what you expect and you need to refine or reproduce your work.

Most important aspect

The most important aspect is that apps are never finished. An app constantly evolves as technology continues to advance as well as the users response to the site. Changes constantly need to be made to ensure the longevity of the app and to continue its effectiveness no matter what year we may be in.
